Atlas Coal Mine

The Atlas Coal Mine is a National Historic Site located in East Coulee, about 21km from Drumheller. The mine operated from 1936 to 1979. It is considered to be Canada's most complete historic coal mine and is home to the country's last standing wooden coal tipple (the 7-story-tall wooden structure where the coal was loaded and sorted).

Tours of the Atlas Coal Mine are available, so we took "The Tunnel Tour" with our guide, Stuart, and a group of about 8 people. We donned our hardhats, with lamps on top, and proceeded to climb in the near-darkness up the low-roofed tunnel with its wooden beams sticking out all over the place. After the tour finished we spent some time exploring the grounds and looking at the scary-looking mining equipment that had maimed and killed so many men during the mining years.
