The Hermitage Amsterdam is a branch museum of the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia. It’s a classical-style building built in 1681, located on the banks of the Amstel river in what used to be an Amstelhof (retirement home). It was renovated and reopened as a museum in 2009. We were especially interested to visit the Hermitage Amsterdam as they were hosting a special exhibit called “Romanovs & Revolution”, which covered the lives of Tsar Nicholas II, Tsarina Alexandra and their 5 children through the years leading up to the Russian revolution, as well as events after 1917. Much of their jewelry, personal effects and photographs were also on display. It was a fascinating way to spend a rainy afternoon.
