Amsterdam’s Oude Kerk (Old Church) is indeed old – 800+ years to be exact. It’s Amsterdam’s oldest building and parish church, founded in about 1213, and interestingly located in what is now the Red Light District. According to the church’s information, the roof of the Oude Kerk is the largest medieval wooden vault in Europe. These Estonian planks date to 1390 and boast some of the best acoustics in Europe. During our visit there was an unusual art installation by artist Sarah van Sonsbeeck, which covered the floor in panels of golden mylar emergency blankets.
