For our last full day in Amsterdam, we chose to make a day trip to see more of the Netherlands countryside. We caught a bus out of Amsterdam to a little fishing town called Marken (pop. 1,810) in North Holland. Marken forms a peninsula in the Markermeer (lake) and was formerly an island in the Zuiderzee (a shallow bay in the North Sea). This small fishing town retains its proud maritime past and the residents work hard to preserve their traditional native culture.
