From Marken, we took the “Volendam-Marken Express” ferry across the Gouwzee waterway to the small town of Volendam. Like Marken, Volendam is known for its colourful wooden houses and old fishing boats in its harbor, but it is much, much more touristy (especially in the section by the pier). Hoards of fellow tourists notwithstanding, we spent the rest of the afternoon exploring this pretty little town – which proved much more rewarding the further we got from the crowded, commercial tourist strip – before heading back to Amsterdam via the local bus.
